MAAT: THE MAGICK OF HERITAGE
Maat Magick is a Thelemic Magick whose purpose is to change the human race from Homo sapiens to Homo veritas
by means of personal transformation.
Along with the individual Initiatory work, Maat Magick includes large-scale rituals with many participants. Three of these were performed at consecutive Winterstars ('84-'86): the Tree of Life, the Elevenstar Working and the Circus of the Aeons.
The large-scale rites are intended to cause global change, to affect the entire species of humanity--including the participants. The individual praxis of Maat Magick also includes world-scale workings, but numbers multiply the effects. Through sincere participation, each ritualist becomes a living talisman who radiates the specific energies of the rite throughout his/her sphere of influence.
Concentration and focus on the ritual generates double consciousness among the participants, which is the condition of being Homo veritas. This workshop includes just such a ritual. Since showing is better than telling, experiencing is better than listening or reading. Every problem perceived should suggest its own remedy.
The ideas of this rite began with the image of a child. The Child, whether in the form of Harpocrat, baby Krishna, Cupid, the infant Hermes, etc., represents all the world's children, from quickening to puberty.
With the image of the Child came the image of the Forgotten One of altruism. Altruism here means the urge to give help to strangers. The Forgotten Ones are human survival instincts and urges, hard-wired into our neurosystem, and often at odds with our assumptions, lifestyles and self-image. The basic ones are hunger, sex, fight or flight, clanning, communication, curiosity, altruism and religion.
A little contemplation of the Forgotten Ones reveals the relationships among them, their complimentary and sometimes conflicting natures, and the circumstances under which some are primary and others are subordinated in action.
They are also linked to the major Chakras in ascending order.
Homo sapiens is only a phase of human existence, aspiring to civilization and maturity, but usually in the throes of confusion and conflict. As a whole, our passions and actions are not serving us well.
Envision the children of the world: some are loved and cherished, well cared-for and educated. Others are hungry and abused, exploited and neglected. One can only guess at the proportions, but even one child in pain merits our attention and help.
Consider the legacy of the planet they stand to inherit from us, as we inherited it from our ancestors. We're in the process of using up non-renewable resources, fouling the air, water and land, and destroying countless species of plants and animals
who are our priceless companions in life.
Think about the lies and crippling attitudes we're teaching the impressionable minds and characters of the children. We teach them, directly or indirectly, that wealth equals worth, that differences in race, gender and nationality indicate superiority and inferiority, and that moral choices are to be governed by expediency, public opinion, authority or dead literature.
I offer these motives for making altruism with children a strong component of your Magick:
1) Enlightened self-interest. If reincarnation is a reality, our
descendants will be our ancestors. How we care for them and the planet bears directly on the world we'll live in.
2) Manifested transcendence. By spending time and energy on the children of the world, we reach beyond our restricting egos into a larger existence. Since Initiation involves the expansion of consciousness, such active reaching assists our own spiritual growth.
3) The legacy of love under will. Our influence, for good or ill,will outlive our mortal bodies as it spreads, in a ripple effect,
from one individual to another, through the years.
We don't need to be physical parents to achieve a type of immortality. Through world Magick focusing on the well-being of all children, we encourage and sponsor their development and evolution.
It should go without saying that in order to fully earth any Magickal working, the essence of it needs to be put into practice in everyday life. Organizations for children stand in constant need of volunteers and donors of time as well as money.

THE RITE OF THE CHILDREN
This ritual requires no altar or tools, although they can be used. The Master of
Ceremonies (any gender) calls for the response of all. where indicated. The
directional invocations and closures can be done by individual volunteers, as can
the statements and pledges in the promise section.
The circle dance chant is sung on the same notes as the "Isis, Astarte..." chant.
Energy spheres are generated, maintained and changed through visualization
and concentration of will. Their tactile effects are spontaneous.)
